Day 10: Time to Focus

This blog has been quite sad for a while as I have been going through some things and it's been on my mind and I didn't want to deny what was going on and post something that I wasn't feeling. Thank you for following and showing your support during that time. It has been quite a journey that I am and will be continuing on.
However, it is time to move this blog forward and work out my thoughts about photography and what I am struggling with.

Yesterday was our first day in lab and we were shown how to use the 4x5 camera. When it was first pulled out of the box I was quite intimidated by it, but after learning about all the components and having the chance to work with it, I am excited to get started with it. It will be quite amazing to work with such an antique piece of equipment and I am looking forward to seeing what I can produce with it.

It is challenging and limited in the sense of how many exposures I will have a chance to make. I would only have about 8 exposures each time I take it out to shoot, this is a significant drop from my 36 exposure film.  With limitations creativity is pushed further and that is part of the challenge. It will force me to consider my shot even more and truly concentrate on my subject matter and compose a significant shot.

Another thing I have to consider is a major project I will be working on throughout the semester. It is called the calendar project. I am to take pictures throughout the semester with a medium format camera and from those rolls find 13 images that are part of a theme and turn them into a calendar.
Here are some ideas I  have. Please let me know what you think:
  • Photograph people's hands and see how it has matched their profession over time.
  • Photograph temples, but that's on my low list.
  • Photograph glass bottles .... yeah, don't really know where I'm going with this.
  • Photograph shoes.. again with the wear and tear over time...
Anyhow, any ideas are most welcomed! Please help!

  1. i like the hands and profession idea..
what if you mixed matched peoples hands and a corresponding photo of them at work on your calendar? That way people would have to guess whose hands were in what profession. Hope that makes sense!
